The book “Young people with HIV"

Background for publishing the book

The idea to write the book “Young people with HIV” came up in connection with meetings and weekend trips with the Group of Young HIV Positives. We have not been able to find similar narratives about young people and their lives with HIV and together with the young people we chose to collect some of their stories in a book.

The purpose is for young people in general, young people with HIV, relatives, friends and healthcare professionals to benefit from the insight into the life of being a young HIV positive.

The book also contains experiences of healthcare professionals with young HIV positives.

This last  part of the book has a section with good advice for professionals and relatives in contact with young HIV positives.

The book

Pauline:
My heart has always been divided into a white and a black part, and my friends have only seen the white, positive side. The black part is the HIV one, which I have hardly shared with anyone.

Peter:
It may be that HIV is associated with taboo and shame in society in general, but this is even more so in the gay environment.

Sofus:
My dad - and the staff at the hospital - have given me so many condoms that I won't run out until I'm 150 years old!

Lærke:
I had to push harder than others to open the doors to the future, and the result is that I'm now stronger.

Aimée:
I simply denied the fact that I was in the same situation as the unfortunate people I had visited as a volunteer in Africa.

Frederik:
If I told them, a lot of people would distance themselves from me, and people around me would start talking.

Sofie:
It's strange to think that I could have been dead by now, and that I'm only alive today, because the doctors know more now.

Jesper: I was so full of shame; I couldn't look at myself in the mirror or look into the eyes of other people.

Review

In Young People with hiv eight young people tell about being young and infected with HIV.  The book can be read by young people from the age of 15 years and can be used for education in connection with project assignments on HIV and AIDS or as part of sex education as the book presents some human aspects that makes the disease very present and understandable to young people. Moreover, the book can be used by relatives and new healthcare professionals of young HIV positives to gain insight into the thoughts of the HIV positives and their expectations to their surroundings.
